What are segments, and how do I use them?

Which subscription do I have?

From September 30, 2024, we've upgraded our segments! You can now manage all of them easily through the 'Segments' page. Your existing list segments (under 'Contacts' → 'Lists' → 'Segments') are ready to be converted into this new, improved experience.

A segment is a specific group of contacts based on certain conditions, such as actions, website visits, field values, and tags. For example, you can create a segment based on demographics, a specific tag, who clicked on a campaign, or opened it, and much more.

Segments are essential for email marketing – they allow you to send highly personalized campaigns and messages to a specific target audience, helping you increase revenue, boost engagement, and improve email deliverability.

In this article, we will explain how segments work in MailBlue, what the next steps are, and provide a list of segment definitions.

How can I create segments?

You create segments using the segment builder. This builder is available in several places on the platform, so it always feels familiar when you want to create a new segment.

Here is where you can find the segment builder:

  • Segment Overview ('Contacts' → 'Segments')
  • Advanced Search
  • Campaigns
  • Scoring
  • Automation triggers
  • Automation actions:
    • If/else step
    • Wait step
    • Goal step

You can create segments anywhere the segment builder is available, but you can only save segments in the segment overview from "Segments," "Advanced Search," or the campaign overview when creating a campaign. Saving segments allows you to easily find and reuse them. Want to see an example of how to create a segment? Watch the video below:

What are AI-suggested segments?

AI-suggested segments automatically appear in your account with a sparkling icon next to the segment name.

The AI generates three segments specifically for your account, based on user activity, behavior, and trends in your industry.

How does the segment overview work?

In the segment overview in your MailBlue account, you manage all your saved segments. To access it, click on "Contacts" → "Segments." From this page, you can create, save, edit, and delete segments, view AI suggestions, and check the number of contacts in each segment.

How can I edit segments?

  1. Click on 'Contacts' → 'Segments' to go to the segment overview.
  2. Click on the segment name, or click the 'Edit' button to the right of the segment you want to edit.
  3. Adjust your segment as needed. To change conditions, use the dropdown menus in the segment builder to apply different segmentation options. You can also add additional conditions by clicking 'Add another condition' or create new segment groups by clicking 'Add new segment group'.
  4. When you are done editing, click the 'Save' button.

How can I delete segments?

  1. Click on 'Contacts' → 'Segments' to go to the segment overview.
  2. Click the arrow to the right of the 'Edit' button for the segment you want to delete.
  3. Click 'Delete'.
  4. Click 'OK' to confirm the deletion of the segment.

How can I use saved segments?

At the bottom of the segment builder, under "Saved Segments," you can use or add the conditions of a saved segment to your current segment. This helps you maintain consistency and save time.

Note: When you use a segment from the "Saved Segments" section, the conditions are added to the segment you are creating. They do not replace the existing conditions.

In the example below, we added the conditions from the saved segment "Active Contacts" to the active segment "Tag is Newsletter" by clicking the "Use conditions" button.

Conclusion

Using segments is essential if you want to take your email marketing to the next level. Segments allow you to divide your contacts into specific groups based on behavior, actions, or tags, enabling you to send highly personalized campaigns that are much more relevant to your audience.
