Explanation of start triggers per basic subscription
Start triggers available from a Starter subscription
The Starter subscription gives you access to essential start triggers that allow you to automate your workflows. These triggers are ideal for managing lists, forms, and basic interactions.
Subscribes to a list
This trigger starts an automation as soon as a contact is added to a list. You can select a specific list or “any list”. If you want an automation to start when contacts are added to multiple specific lists, you can add multiple “Subscription” triggers (one per list).
Applications:
- Send welcome emails.
- Create an onboarding sequence.
Note: If you use a MailBlue form with double opt-in, contacts will only be added to your automation after they have confirmed their subscription.
Unsubscribes from a list
This trigger starts an automation when someone unsubscribes from a list. Unsubscriptions can be initiated by the contact (for example, via the unsubscribe link in an automated email) or by you (via an “Unsubscribe” action in an automation or by manually removing them from a list).
Applications:
- Decrease a contact or deal score.
- Send a notification to your team that an unsubscription has occurred.
- Terminate other automation workflows.
Submits a form
This trigger starts an automation when a contact submits a MailBlue form. You can set the automation to start for any form or for specific forms. If you want an automation to start for multiple specific forms, add multiple triggers (one per form).
Applications:
- Provide opt-in incentives.
- Add interest tags to enable targeted follow-up communication.
- Increase a contact score.
Note: If you use a form with double opt-in, contacts will only be added to your automation after they have confirmed their subscription.
Opens/reads an email
With this trigger, you can start an automation when a contact opens a campaign or 1-to-1 email.
Applications:
- Adjust contact or deal scores.
- Tag engaged contacts.
- Send a follow-up email.
- Create a nurture sequence.
Availability:
- This trigger is available from a Plus subscription.
- Transactional emails are available with the Transactional Email add-on (Postmark integration).
- For use with 1-to-1 emails, the CRM Essentials add-on is required.
Note: Contacts using the Apple Mail app with iOS 15 and Mail Privacy Protection are excluded from this trigger, unless they click on a link in the email.
Clicks a link in an email
This trigger starts an automation when a contact clicks on a link in a campaign or 1-to-1 email. You can set the trigger to work for a specific link or for “any link”.
Applications:
- Add interest tags.
- Send follow-up messages, such as “You haven’t registered for the webinar yet…”
- Adjust contact or deal scores.
Availability:
- This trigger is available from a Plus subscription.
- For use with 1-to-1 emails, the CRM Essentials add-on is required.
Shares an email
This trigger starts an automation when a contact clicks on a social share button in a campaign or automation email that has link tracking enabled.
Applications:
- Send a notification to your team that the email has been shared.
- Adjust contact or deal scores.
- Thank a contact for sharing your campaign.
Forwards an email
This trigger starts an automation when a contact uses the “Forward-to-a-Friend” form in a campaign or automation email.
Applications:
- Thank a contact for forwarding the email.
- Adjust contact or deal scores.
Replies to an email
With this trigger, you can start an automation when a contact responds to a campaign or 1-to-1 email.
Applications:
- Create a task to respond.
- Move a deal to a different stage in your pipeline.
- Adjust contact or deal scores.
Availability:
- Campaigns: This trigger is available from a Plus subscription.
- 1-to-1 emails: Requires the CRM Essentials add-on.
Tag added
This trigger starts an automation when a specific tag is added to a contact. If you want a contact to restart the automation with the same tag, the tag must first be removed and then added again.
Applications:
- Start a series of messages.
- Stop another automation.
Tag removed
This trigger starts an automation when a specific tag is removed from a contact.
Applications:
- Terminate another automation.
- Start a series of follow-up messages.
- Adjust a contact or deal score.
Visits a webpage
This trigger starts an automation when a contact visits a specific webpage. You can choose a specific page, “any page”, or a group of pages.
Applications:
- Send follow-up emails.
- Add interest tags.
- Adjust contact or deal scores.
Note: This trigger requires that you have set up Site Tracking.
Start triggers available with specific 'Apps'
These triggers are activated by specific actions in connected apps, such as Calendly and Typeform.
Available triggers:
- Calendly meeting received
- Typeform form received
Applications:
- Send a series of reminder or follow-up emails.
- Create a deal for the contact and guide it through your sales process.
- Adjust a contact score.
Note: These triggers are only activated if you have enabled an integration and connected a meeting type or form during the setup. Each trigger is executed only once per contact in your automation.
Combining automations with triggers and actions
By using triggers to start automations for specific groups of contacts, you can treat contacts differently based on their behavior. You can combine these triggers with actions to create targeted workflows that align seamlessly with your business goals.
For more information on the available actions that you can combine with these triggers, see the article: What actions can I use within an automation?
