How can I trigger a contact to start at a specific point in an automation?

Which subscription do I have?

With the goal action, you can add contacts to a specific point in your automation. In this article, we'll show you how to do that.

Please note: Generally, we strongly advise against making adjustments in an active automation. This can lead to unexpected errors. Therefore, always set the automation to 'Inactive' before you start working on it!

If the situation requires the automation to be 'Active' (e.g. starting contacts at a specific point), it's better to set this aside.

Imagine you have a contact who has already completed the automation before you added extra steps. You still want this contact to receive the remaining emails. You can add the contact back to the automation, but you don't want the contact to receive the same emails again. With the goal action, you can ensure that the contact skips the emails they have already received.

For more information about the goal action, read this article.

In this example, we use a tag for the goal condition. In other words, when a contact has a specific tag, they are immediately directed to the goal action. You can also do this based on any other conditions.

To add a contact to a specific point in your automation with a goal step and a tag, follow these steps:

  1. Determine where you want to add the contact in the automation. Click on the plus sign (+).
  2. Under 'Conditions and workflow', select the action 'Goal'

  3. Name your goal and click on 'Click to add a goal'.

  4. In the segment builder, specify 'Tag is Jump to goal'. You can name this tag as you wish. Then click on 'Close'.

  5. Once you have saved this, leave the rest of the settings as they are.

  7. Manually add the contact to the automation

  8. When you view the path of this contact (by clicking on the automation on the contact page and then on 'Show'), you will see that the contact has skipped the intermediate steps and gone directly to the goal action.
