How can you check in an automation if a contact is unsubscribed from all lists?

Please note: In general, we strongly advise against making adjustments in an active automation. This can lead to unexpected errors. Therefore, always set the automation to 'Inactive' before making any changes!

If it is a situation where it is necessary for the automation to be 'Active' (e.g. starting contacts in a specific place), it is better to set this aside.

To further clean up your mailing lists and improve the deliverability of your emails, you can use an automation. Within this automation, you can check if certain contacts are not subscribed to any list. You can then proceed to remove them.

This involves using the If/Else step. This step can be part of a complex automation, or it can be the only step in an automation. Additionally, after the If/Else step, you can assign them a tag to subsequently remove them.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Click on the plus icon in the automation
  2. Click on Conditions and Workflow: If/ElseAls_anders_stap_.png
  3. A window will appear.
  4. Click on '(Select a condition)'. A dropdown menu will open.
  5. Go to 'Actions'.
  6. Choose 'In list' or 'Not in list'. Als_ander_stap.png
  7. Select a list.
  8. Then click on 'Add another condition'.

Pay attention to selecting 'AND' here. For 'OR', check if a contact is unsubscribed from any of the lists. More information on 'AND/OR logic in the condition builder can be found here

9. Then repeat steps 4 to 7 until you have selected all lists.

When a contact chooses 'not in list X', the contact will go to YES if they are unsubscribed from all selected lists.

When a contact chooses 'in list X', the contacts will go to NO if they are unsubscribed from all selected lists and therefore not subscribed to any list.

For example: Contact X will be sent to the 'NO' side when 'in list X'. This contact is then not in list X, not in list Y, not in list Z, etc.

Please note: Contacts who are unsubscribed from all lists do not count towards the total number of contacts in your account.
