How to segment on empty fields?

In the condition builder, you can segment based on empty contact, deal, and account fields. This allows you to see which important pieces of information are missing, so you can start filling in the contact details. In this article, you will learn how to do this.

Please note:

  • Deal and account fields are only available for Plus and Professional subscriptions.
  • The 'is empty' and 'is not empty' options in the condition builder can be used for;
    - Advanced search in the 'Contacts' main menu
    - Segmenting when creating a Campaign
    - The trigger for an automation
    - The actions in an automation
    - Contact scoring

Fields where you can use the 'is empty' and 'is not empty' conditions

The 'is empty' and 'is not empty' conditions can be used for all custom account fields, contact fields, and deal fields. You can also use it for the following standard fields in MailBlue:

Geography - in Lite, Plus, and Professional

  • Country
  • Province
  • City
  • Postal code
  • Country code

Contact details - in Lite, Plus, and Professional

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Full name
  • Phone number

Account details - in Plus and Professional

  • Account name
  • Account URL
  • Address 1
  • Address 2
  • City
  • Province
  • Postal code
  • Country code
  • Phone number
  • Description
  • Number of employees
  • Annual revenue

Creating a search using an empty field

You can search for an empty field using an advanced search. In the following example, we search for contacts with an empty field in 'Last name'.

1. Click on 'Contacts' to go to the contacts overview page

2. Click on 'Search Contacts' in the search bar and then on 'Advanced search'

3. Next, you will see the condition builder on the screen and you can choose the desired field. Here, we choose 'Last name', under the 'Contact details' category.

4. Click on the drop-down menu and select 'Is empty'.

5. Click on 'Search'.

6. All contacts with the 'Last name' field empty will then appear.

Saving a search

You can save your search as a segment so you can use the same search in the future:

1. Open the condition builder.

2. Now click on 'Save as segment'.

3. A window will appear where you can give the segment a name and save it:
